NEW DELHI: Editors of leading South Asian media organisations are arriving here to participate in the first-ever SAARC editors’ conference on Friday and Saturday, to discuss issues related to media and publishing.
The conference is being jointly organised by the External Affairs Ministry and the Media Development Foundation (MDF), a non-profit public trust owned by The Hindu group of newspapers that runs the prestigious Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in Chennai.
Although the conference is not a part of the official SAARC calendar, External Affairs Ministry officials here believe that it would help in the build-up to the 14th SAARC summit, to be held here on April 3 and 4.
A concept note on the conference said the gathering was aimed at “free and open discussions” on media-related issues that could help initiate wider public and civil society debate in South Asia.
Leading editors expected to attend the conference are Kanak Mani Dixit, Narayan Wagle and Yubaraj Ghimire from Nepal; Rehana Hakim, Imran Aslam, Najam Sethi and Abbas Nasir from Pakistan; Mahfuz Anam, Shyamal Datta and Saiful Bari from Bangladesh; Sonam Kinga, Tashi Phuntsho Wangdi and Dasho Kinley Dorji from Bhutan; Thavarajah, Jatila Wallabada and Sinha Ratnatunga from Sri Lanka; Abdullah Naeem and Mariyam Suhana from the Maldives; and Hamida Osman, Zaid Mohseni and Barry Salam from Afghanistan.
